Gareth Southgate Resigns as England Manager

Southgate Stands Down After Eight Years in Charge

Historic Tenure Ends with Euro 2024 Final Defeat

Gareth Southgate, the England manager for the past eight years, has resigned following the team's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate, who has held the record as the man who has represented England in more games than anyone else, with 102 games as men's senior team manager and 57 caps as a player, will remain in charge until after the European Championships in 2024.

Southgate was appointed England manager in 2016 and has overseen a period of significant progress for the team. Under his leadership, England reached the first World Cup semi-final for 28 years in 2018 and the first major men's final in 55 years at Euro 2020.

However, England's recent performances have been disappointing, and the team's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final proved to be the final straw for Southgate. In a statement released by the Football Association, Southgate said: "It is with deep regret that I have decided to step down as England manager. I have given it my all, but I believe the time is right for someone else to take the reins."

The Football Association has thanked Southgate for his service and wished him well for the future. The search for a new England manager will begin immediately.
