Canada Criticizes US over Increased Tariffs on Softwood Lumber Imports
Canada Expresses Disappointment and Announces Legal Challenge
Canada's International Trade Minister Slams Unfair Duties
Canada's International Trade Minister, Mary Ng, has strongly criticized the United States for its decision to significantly hike tariffs on softwood lumber imports from Canada. Minister Ng expressed Canada's deep disappointment and stated that the government would formally challenge the new duties.
The US Department of Commerce recently announced a dramatic increase in duties, raising the rate from approximately 9% to 17.99%. Canada maintains that these duties are unwarranted and unfair, and Minister Ng has initiated a formal challenge through the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Canada has previously filed a notice of intent to challenge the US International Trade Commission's (USITC) ruling that found Canadian softwood lumber imports to be harming US producers. The new challenge will focus on the US Commerce Department's decision to increase the tariffs based on the USITC's findings.
The Canadian government believes that the US actions are unjustified and have no basis in law. Canada continues to maintain that its softwood lumber industry operates fairly and is not subsidized. The increased tariffs are viewed as a protectionist measure aimed at supporting US producers at the expense of Canadian exporters.
