Mpox (Monkeypox): A Global Health Emergency
What is Mpox?
Mpox is a viral disease that primarily occurs in central and western Africa.
It was initially discovered in laboratory monkeys, hence the name "monkeypox."
Outbreak in 2022
Since early May 2022, cases of mpox have been reported in countries where it is not endemic and continue to be reported.
Sporadic cases have been reported in several locations, including countries, territories, and areas that have not historically reported mpox.
In May 2022, a significant outbreak spread across the world, driven primarily but not exclusively through:
- Close personal contact with an infected person
- Contact with contaminated materials
- Animal bites or scratches
The rapid spread of mpox in African countries has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global health emergency.
