Tragic Crash Claims Lives of 228
Over 250 souls lost in Guam disaster
On August 6, 1997, the world was shocked by the tragic crash of Korean Air Flight 801. The Boeing 747-300, carrying 254 passengers and crew, was attempting to land at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam when it crashed into a hillside, killing 228 people.
Of the 254 people on board, 209 were passengers and 14 were crew members. All three flight crew members and 11 cabin crew members were killed at the crash site. Of the 31 occupants found alive by rescue crews, 2 died en route to the hospital and a further 3 in hospital.
The crash of Korean Air Flight 801 remains the deadliest aviation disaster in United States history to have survivors. The cause of the crash was determined to be pilot error, with the flight crew failing to maintain proper situational awareness and make timely course corrections.
